PAUL ROMINE"S 1979 FORD MUSTANG NITRO FUNNY CAR
If you have ever wanted to go nitro funny car racing...well, here is your chance to own one of the most popular and well built/maintained nostalgia nitro funny cars to ever hit a track. This auction is for the complete turn key 1979 Ford Mustang nitro funny car belonging to Paul Romine.
This car is currently completely assembled, ready to run. And unlike so many allegedly complete cars that just need nitro...this one is absolutely ready to run, and since we only ever knew one way to do it...run at the top of the pack.
What is unique about this auction is, you get to decide how you would like to buy the car. By that, I am offering the lucky winner the choice of a 100% NHRA Heritage legal car, with a brand new Mallory Super mag with MSD conversion cap & rotor, the latest FIE (Spuds Miller) coil & bracket and a fresh back from Rage NHRA legal sealed 20.9 GPM fuel pump...OR, you can have it with a 25 GPM fuel pump and a complete MSD Promag 44 magneto, coil and control box. You also get to pick which clutch assembly you want, we have a pair of AFT 10.5 3 disc clutches to choose from, all titanium and fresh, or a Boninfante 10.5 titanium 3 disc. I will list all of the components in more detail a little further down.
The core of this car is a Spitzer Enterprises 125 W.B. purpose built nostalgia style funny car chassis. While a lot of folks opted for a big show car to reconfigure, Mike Spitzer built this car specifically for the nostalgia style powerplants, and as such the engine placement and geometry have created a racecar that might be able to get down a dirt road, and in all the years of running this car might have smoked the times 10 times, a very impressive statistic if you are going to race in situations where track prep or moisture are an issue. And if you notice, the chassis appears black, it is actually Keyphos coated, a coating that allows you to still inspect the chassis for cracks or damage, yet eliminates a need to oil the chassis or scotchbrite it to eliminate the pesky rust issues that crop up from time to time. This was an extensive job to do, but in the end makes the car that much easier to maintain.
The body is a carbon fiber version of the popular 1979 Ford Fox body Mustang. This body is not only incredibly lightweight, but very strong. One of the really nice aspects of this race car is that it is probably one of the lightest nitro funny cars out there, we have to add a considerable amount of weight to be legal, and fortunately there are several places to put it to optimize the weight bias...something that"s hard to do if your car is overweight to begin with.
The power for this car comes in the form of an AJPE forged hemi block and AJPE Nostalgia billet heads. The engine is a 413displacement (4.187 bore and 3.750 stroke). The supercharger is the latest SSI G rotor design 6-71 supercharger. This supercharger at only 10% overdrive will make in excess of 38# of boost. All of the internals are either new or near new...and Paul has one of the most rigorous inspection programs in all of drag racing. He even has a cam doctor so he can check brand new camshafts to make certain they were ground correctly, and as advertised. The crankshafts re RCD splined Bryant cranks and Venolia pistons and GRP rods round out the rotating assembly. The mag drive is an air retard/advance unit and the cam and lifters are Bullet/Morel. All of the rocker arms are Stage 5 rollers with PSI oiling on the intakes and AJPE stands. Manton pushrods complete the valvetrain, and it has an RCD gear drive and dry sump oiling system. The valve covers and oil pan are fabricated billet rail pieces from Williams Mfg.
The fuel injection is a combination of Rage Racing fuel pump, a magnesium Gerardot injector and Waterman and Enderle nozzle bodies and jets. The metering valve (barrel valve) is a JT Stewart unit designed for the smaller nitro pumps, not some reworked big show piece, and it also allows for changing the idle circuit GPM with a simple adjustment. The hat has all Enderle nozzle bodies, the idle circuit uses Waterman long style drop in jets and the run side jets are all Waterman ball check nozzle bodies & drop in jets. There is a simple hi/lo valve for the burnout and run and an even simpler leanout system for using a larger fuel pump.
The drivetrain consists of a choice of either a Boninfante or Aft 10.5 3 disc titanium glide style clutch. We use the larger 10 spline 1 3/4 spline discs. The 2 speed transmission is a the latest offering from B&J and there is also an option of either a 1.37 or 1.25 to 1 ratio transmission. Both are fresh with zero runs, as well as the clutch choice...all 3 clutches we have are fresh with zero runs. The bellhousing is a Trick Titanium unit and in excellent condition with no damage. The rear axle assembly is a Spitzer Enterprises fabricated 9.5 Ford style with all Strange Engineering components. This car has carbon brakes front & rear and everything is like new. Check out the pictures and you will see that this is a very utilitarian car, not a lot of gauges and gizmo"s , just the items you really need to go from A to B.
This is a very safe racecar, it has all of the required or suggested safety items to pass tech at any race. The helmet shield is carbon fiber, all of the engine/supercharger restraints and diapers are Taylor Motorsports, as are the belts. it comes with the helmet padding and a poured seat. All of the firebottles are re-certed and ready to go, and the car is plumbed for not only reliable operation but also for ease of maintenance. This is a very easy car to turn between rounds, and everything is out of the way, so even if you have to change an engine between rounds, it is done in short order.
The computer is a Racepak Pro Series with dash and timing monitoring, which is great if you want to run the MSD Promag 44. The battery was replace late last year and all of the cabling and fiber optics are either new or in perfect condition. We have virtually every run this car has made on a laptop, and that will go with the car. There is so much useable data that is provided that the best part about this car is you don"t have to start over, you just take over from where we left off.
This racecar is currently located in Indianapolis In, and can be inspected by appointment. We can also sell it worldwide, and will for a nominal fee help in preparation for shipment via truck or container, but we cannot provide rates or fees...if you"re in a foreign country and would like to purchase this car, we will accommodate you in any way possible, but we all have day jobs and chasing freight quotes would be too difficult for us.
This racecar is aa multi time DRO series champion, has won a few NHRA Heritage events, and more often than not would be the #1 qualifier or went on to set the track record at a particular event. This is a great way to get into nitro racing and be successful right from the start. You don"t have to make any changes to the car other than personal comfort issues, and for a small fee, if you want we will bring the entire Man-O-War crew to a race or licensing session of your choice, within reason, and get you down the track in fast and safe fashion. Of course, if the lucky new owner wants...they will have first shot at the huge inventory of spare parts and tools/equipment because once the car sells...then so does everything else, and everything else is a list of all the best pit equipment and spare parts you can buy.
Nostalgia nitro racing has become very popular outside the USA, especially in Australia and the U.K. as well as other foreign countries, and that is why we are willing to offer this car for sale globally. Quite a few of the most popular nostalgia nitro funny cars have ended up overseas, and this one likes to travel. And, if the winning bidder wants, they can purchase at an additional price, all the spare parts he wants to run this car for quite a while before having to reload. And every spare part is either new or in perfect as new condition. That must be why we are always the place people come to for parts when theyre at the track:)
In closing, while I regret the fact that we are putting drag racing on hold for the time being, it is always nice to be able to represent the best of what a particular class has to offer, and the Man-O-War nitro funny car is as good as it gets. Feel free to call me at Cavalieri Racing Equipment at 402-597-3242 or my cell number 402-306-7632. With all of the current specialty races and demand for match racing nitro cars...we can provide you with the absolute best tool for the job, and this car is as much at home on the 1/8th mile as it is in the quarter, and since you get to spec it for your specific purpose...you will get exactly what you want without having to spend a bunch of money after the sale. And, no reasonable offer will be refused...if you have an idea, call and see...it never hurts to ask. Thanks again for looking...Mikee
