After reviewing the sale of the popular replica created by Steve Davis and sold by RM Auctions, The Macpherson Collection 2008, I"ve decided to adjust the minimum bid. This listing is for the authentic El Toro Garage Edmunds #35 VW Midget. All the history belongs to this car.
Don Edmunds made some of the finest and most popular VW Midgets. One of the most famous and well know winning cars is the #35 El Toro Garage VW. This is not a replica. The authenticity of this car has been verified by the current owner of Edmunds Autoresearch. This car has amazing historical accomplishments and a drivers list that includes the biggest names in USRC & USAC. In fact, this car was Sammy Swindell"s first midget ride ever. (see Vintage Oval Racing, July 2002 article by Derek Lewin) This is the exact cockpit Sammy was sitting in when he first drove a midget race and won the main event.
Web writer, Gary Wolfe, reported the story of Roger Mauro"s Gold Cup Classic the 1977 Big Car Racing Association event in Colorado. The weekend of racing had both midgets and sprints on the fast dirt oval. Tennessee"s Sammy Swindell, in his first midget ride ever, won the opening night of midgets in the #35 John Notary (El Toro Garage) Edmunds VW.
Larry Patton, Tommy White and Bobby Olivero all drove this car to victories in the Western State midget races. NBC Sports Television presented the USAC Midgets at ASCOT in 1978 . The televised season opener recorded Olivero"s 15th career midget feature win in the #35 El Toro Garage VW.
Completely restored and in race ready condition by the late Joseph C Ricker. This car is a looker and a runner. The car has #89 painted with the same colors as the original. There must have been an agreement with Ricker, at the time of his restoration, to NOT use of the original number and lettering however, this race car earned each and every one of the main event wins credited to the #35 El Toro Garage VW Midget. The history of this car is too vast for an ad. I have restoration records and pictures that Joe assembled to go with the car. Race programs and other setup documentation will be included in the sale. No other spares are included in this auction except the original #35 fiberglass hood pictured above. Please feel free to message me about the car. This car is a very special offering so I plan to answer every question that is asked.
Shipping this car will be at the buyers expense. I will gladly facilitate the transfer with any agent or transport company you assign.
